For the last ten years, Friends have funded this special gift book program aimed at Alachua County’s Head Start students and other low-income, at-risk pre-school children. The program’s goals are to promote early literacy and provide a start for the child’s own personal library. To that end, Library staff selects a high quality hardbound picture book and then teams of Friends volunteers and staff visit classrooms and centers to share the book with the children. They leave copies so each child has one to take home. This year the Snuggle Up & Read teams distributed over 2,600 books through 33 classes or centers. Over the life of the program, Friends funding has provided over 20,000 books to young children in our community.
